What is Fiverr?

Fiverr has been one of the major marketplaces bringing clients and freelancers together, since it started in 2010. The name is a reflection of the original price that was standard for gigs or jobs on the site, which was $5 for each task.

It has its headquarters in Tel Aviv-Yafo Israel, and it provides a global online platform for people to be able to buy or sell digital services in all areas of freelancing. See what Wikipedia says.

Despite having been considered a marketplace for micro-tasks, Fiverr offers a wide range of digital services. From writing, translation services to graphic design, web design, video editing, and programming, on Fiverr, almost everything goes.

How does Fiverr work?

Just like other digital services websites, to get started on Fiverr you need to sign up first. Signing up is free, but one thing to keep in mind is that upon signing up, your account will be sent to any buyer by default, so make sure to change it to the seller by following simple instructions.

The price of a Gig as any job is called can range from $5 up to many thousands of dollars. As a seller, you have the option to choose your price for your work, you can even decide to offer several price packages with the Gig Package option.

The best way to give yourself a good start is by browsing the different categories to see how other sellers are offering their services so you can see where your skills will fit in nicely and how to present them.

Make sure you have everything set clear to make it easy for buyers to locate you in the vastness of the website. Do the following:

  • Ensure your seller profile is complete
  • Write your gigs well and clearly describe the services that you can offer
  • Have clear work samples that concisely and completely display your skills

Also, note that buyers pay in advance for projects on this site, and the money is held up in Escrow until the task is completed, and then released to the seller once the buyer is satisfied.

Fiverr takes 20% of the payment for every task, and sellers retain 80%. For instance, if the gig is worth $5, you will receive $4 as payment for the order – an order is a purchased gig that the seller is working on or has been completed.

What is the potential earning power?

As far as how much you can earn, well, that varies widely depending on several variables. Some people are earning a six-figure a year while others are struggling to make a dime.

The difference is, you earn according to how much you can work and the value of that work. So the more you do and the more people need your work the more you earn.

Another aspect that plays out significantly here is the age and reputation of your account.

If you have been on the site for a considerable amount of time and earned yourself a good number of great reviews, then more buyers will be coming your way, which means more money.

If you deliver quality work for your buyers, you will not only get great reviews, but you will also have more of them coming back for your services.

What I love about Fiverr

There’s a lot about this site that makes it stand out and similarly makes it a great start for those looking to earn money online by selling their skills. Here are a few of the bits that I love about this marketplace.

1. Variety of projects to work on

As I’ve mentioned above, on Fiverr, you can do just about anything from writing and translating to drawing funny stuff on your stomach and modeling for some great photos among other activities.

2. Diversify and upgrade your skillset

And even in the most common projects you will still have the opportunity to diversify, you can be writing a blog post about one business for one gig, and a completely different topic for the next one.

If you love working on unique projects, then this can be a great opportunity to work on a wide variety of topics.

3. The site is easy to use

Another great thing about this marketplace is how simple and straightforward the platform is, which makes it a breeze to find what you might be looking for in next to no time.

Besides, since this site has been around for so long, finding any information about it won’t take you hours of drawn out research.

And yes, there’s also a forum where you can turn for answers if you have any questions, just post your question, and other members will be ready and willing to help out.

4. Make that extra cash

For those looking to make an extra amount of money, then Fiverr is hands down a good place to look.

While you might not be in it to make the insane amounts that some claim to have earned here, there’s always something special about transferring your earnings from there to your account.

5. It’s a great start

Despite having its shortcomings, Fiverr still offers a great opportunity for those who are just starting out and don’t have any clients of their own.

It’s a good chance to practice your bidding skills while still gaining experience in your writing or any other service that you offer.

For those with a few digital service skills and who want to get started, Fiverr might come to the rescue.

What’s not so cool

Now that we’ve looked at some of the bits that make this site worth a try, let’s look into the things that probably turn out to be a bummer for many.

1. Funds take too long to clear

You have completed your first order, and the client has clicked that “Completed” button, everything is all done, and you’re excited to receive your first payment, right? Well, this might not be as fast as you would want it to be.

Unfortunately, and this is a case with most other similar sites out there, once the order has been completed, it takes some time before you can receive the wages for your work.

To be precise, it will take you 14 to 15 days for the money to clear, and that is on top of the 3 days it takes for the order to be automatically considered completed in case the buyers doesn’t confirm it so.

2. Not as much exposure as you need

While Fiverr might be a great start for your online business, the chances of growth are very limited. The competition is significant since sellers are in the thousands.

So you have to self-promote through sharing your gigs out and ensuring they are as SEO-friendly as they can get.

Although the site gives you the platform, you are the one to do the heavy lifting, so if you’re not good at marketing, you might find it difficult to scale up your business.

3. Poor rating on “mutual cancel” orders

It was Fiverr who integrated the mutual cancel feature into their platform. That’s completely fine, as it helps you cancel the order if you are unable to complete it on time, or the client can cancel it if it’s not completed within the deadline.

The problem is, the site has also imposed an automatic 1-star rating for the sellers that it offers on behalf of the client (with an indication that “Seller failed to deliver”) even in the event of a mutual cancelation.

This hurts your rating, and thus bogs down your efforts, cutting on revenue, and diminishing your reputation to potential buyers.

Conclusion

So, is Fiverr any good? Well, just like any other digital marketplace out there, Fiverr has its awesome upsides and its fair share of downsides.

Whether to sign up and give it a go, what to work on, and when is all a matter of choice. So if you are looking for an opportunity to kickstart your freelance business, this post has shared many of the things you need to know about this platform.

I think Fiverr and freelancing here have their merits, however, what I do in the affiliate marketing space has much more potential in my eyes. Maybe you would like to see the opportunity that affiliate marketing offers by working every day at home at your pace.
